Research Symposium

The research symposium is held every year at the different locations of the MPFL project partners (Germany, Belgium and Portugal). It offers the possibility to maintain contact and to exchange knowledge and information about the ongoing research of each partner. It consists of several presentations and discussions at the end of the partners and their research.

Meeting Point Functional Layers
or MPFL is a research network funded by the DAAD to enable students and researchers to study, work and conduct research across borders and across disciplines. MPFL brings together scientists from engineering, microsystems, nanotechnology, applied life sciences, chemistry, physics, biotechnology and medicine to teach and work together in the broad field of functional layers.

Linda Kuaguim, UAS KL, participant Summer School Functional Coatings

“Finally participating in the summer school in the University of Hasselt was a good idea and I strongly recommend this kind of programme to all students, who want to acquire an experience in foreign countries during their studies. This programme does not only help one to improve his/her English knowledge it turns also to increase our knowledge on new techniques in our study-field ... and applications of functional coatings in real life. Above all it gave me the opportunity to learn a new culture, meet interesting people and have a taste on Belgians’ delicious caramelized waffles and chocolates.”

Matthias Booten, Hasselt University, study stay at UAS KL

“I see my Erasmus traineeship at the University of Applied Sciences as a very rewarding experience. I learned to socially integrate in another country and found my German colleagues to be kind-hearted and open-minded people, who were never afraid to share their knowledge or good advice. I believe my time in Zweibrücken provided a wealth of knowledge and an invaluable experience which will not only help me as a future engineer but also as a person.”

Summer School

Every year MPFL offers Summer Schools at both Hasselt University (Belgium) and at the University of Applied Sciences Kaiserslautern (Germany). The Summer School at Hasselt is focusing on "Functional Coatigns" while the Summer School at UAS Kaiserslautern promises "Hands on Micro Systems". Specialists lectures are accompanied by laboratory practice and clean room expieriences. In addition the students can develop technolical skills, establish international contacts and develop intercultural competence.

Joint supervision PhD programme

Cooperation between the University of Applied Sciences
Kaiserslautern and Hasselt University
Cooperation between the University of Applied Sciences Kaiserslautern and Hasselt University

The University of Applied Sciences Kaiserslautern cooperates with Hasselt University in a joint PhD programme. The joint supervision of PhDs enables PhD students to conduct their research under the supervision of two universities, with a supervisor at Hasse lt University and a supervisor at the University of Applied Sciences Kaiserslautern. lf successful, the PhD student will receive a doctoral degree from Hasselt University with a reference to the cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences Kaiserslautern.

The added value of this cooperation

The cooperation between the two partner institutions stimulates scientific cooperation, encourages the exchange of information between universities and increases internationalization through the mobility of Ph D students.

Also, for the PhD student this cooperation has great added value. The PhD student benefits from a broad scientific network, and the relevant knowledge and experience of both institutions. S/he can also use the research infrastructure at both institutions.
